Ten years ago, the award winning musical, “Hamilton,” hit the Broadway stage. In celebration of this milestone, the filmed version of “Hamilton” began playing in theaters on Sept. 5.

“Hamilton” came from the mind of Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers during the first years of United States history. The story is through different genres of music including, pop, rap, and contemporary style songs.

English teacher Madonna McGovern is also in anticipation for “Hamilton” to be in theaters. She has seen “Hamilton” on stage twice and is hoping to be able to see it again in her upcoming trip to New York City.

“I do love that they used rap music to tell the story. It’s something you would not expect. It’s celebrating our founding fathers but using a current method to do so,” McGovern said. “I think it’s interesting to take something historical and make it accessible for a modern audience.”

In 2020, a recorded version of the original Broadway production was released on Disney+.

“I became a fan because my mom would play it in the car, especially ‘My Shot,’” sophomore Elizabeth Hunter said. “I just kinda became familiar with it and then it came out on Disney+ so I was able to finally watch it with her.”

Hunter has seen “Hamilton” on stage four times. She has seen it twice on traveling Broadway in Indianapolis and twice on Broadway in New York City.

“I’m excited for ‘Hamilton’ to be playing in theaters because it will be so fun to see the audience enjoy it. I’ll be able to go and watch it with my friends and [enjoy] the aspect of singing along.,” Hunter said.

Hunter finds “Hamilton” an exciting musical because of its entertaining way of telling history.

“I think ‘Hamilton’ is so loved because it has a great spin on history. It shows it in a true emotional way. I feel like I’m learning stuff while having fun,” Hunter said.

Others find “Hamilton” entertaining because of its cast and choreography.

“The cast is very diverse and so I like that aspect of it. The singing and dancing is so phenomenal,” sophomore Erika Kauchak said.

While Kauchak has not seen “Hamilton” on stage yet, she is going to the show in Dec.

“I’m very excited about it. I’m excited to go see it with all my friends and just be able to sing all the songs,” Kauchak said.

“Hamilton” fans are all looking forward to being able to watch their favorite cast members perform on the movie theater screen.

“It might spark your interest. History, it’s always relevant and we learn from it. I think it’s interesting to see how things came to be. It’s interesting to see how the world has changed and developed, but also hasn’t really changed much,” McGovern said.
