The NPHS girls golf team started out the season strong. Their seniors are hoping to make their final year one to remember.

The Dragons opened up with a win over Greenwood, defeating them 186 to 228. Senior Lauren Deering, the number one varsity golfer, led the team by shooting a 37, the best score of the match.

For Deering, the strong start is only the beginning. She has goals for both herself and the team during her final season.

“My personal goal is to make it to state for the fourth year”, “and the team goal is to win sectionals for the fourth year”, “I think,” Deering said.

Before each match, Deering has a routine that she follows.

“Before my match I make sure I warm up for at least 30 minutes and I try to keep things light so I don’t overthink anything,” Deering said.

As one of the seniors on the team, Deering likes to make sure that the younger golfers enjoy and want to be a part of the program.

“As a senior”, “I try my best to include all of the girls and I try to keep everything light to make sure they have fun,” Deering said.

Having fun has been an important part of Deering’s time with the team. One of her favorite memories came during her freshman and sophomore years when the team went to Weenie World after a conference win.

“My favorite memory has to be Weenie World freshman and sophomore year after the conference tournament and we would get into the little rides they have there,” Deering said.

That is also why her biggest advice to younger golfers is simple: make the sport fun.

“My one word of advice I have is to make it fun. You can never be perfect at golf no matter how much work you put into it, so in that case make sure you have fun throughout the whole process,” Deering said.

Fellow senior Tessa Mohr has a similar mindset going into her final season. Instead of focusing on one specific result, she wants to continue improving throughout the year.

“I really just want to keep improving and get better scores each tournament. I really just want to have fun with each match,” Mohr said.

Mohr also has a much simpler pregame routine.

“I drink a yellow gatorade before each match,” Mohr said.

This season is also very special for Mohr because she gets to play alongside her younger sister, who is a sophomore on the team.
