As the girls tennis season begins, the team is entering optimistic and excited for their upcoming season. Junior Addi Ballard feels confident about the team’s success this year.
“I think our season is going to go well,” she said. “We have a pretty strong team this year, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.” Senior Alyssa Appleby shares that same confidence, especially as the team adjusts to filling the gap left by the three varsity seniors last year.
“There are some big shoes to fill this year,” Appleby said. “But our players work well together and have the ability to step up.” Appleby thrives on the competitive atmosphere that only real matches can bring. “Playing in a match is so much better than just practicing,” she said. “There’s more of a competitive drive, and you have to think about the other players’ weaknesses and how to beat them.” However, match days aren’t just about competition; they’re also a chance for the girls to show off a new hairstyle, adding a bit of personalization to the sport. For Ballard, match days are the most exciting part of the season.
“Match days are the best part because I love playing real matches and cheering on my teammates,” she said. “I also love our uniforms, and each match is another opportunity to do another hairstyle.” One major change this season was the introduction of mandatory tryouts over spring break. Appleby admitted the timing wasn’t ideal, but she understood the purpose.
“Having tryouts over break sucks,” she said. “But you have to be committed if you want to be the best you can. Some people, myself included, had to change plans, but it all worked out in the end.” Ballard also embraced the change.
“We’ve always had open courts over spring break, but never mandatory tryouts,” she said. “I don’t mind it because tennis is a big commitment, and I know I have to put a lot of time and effort into it.
