As the softball season starts underway, senior leadership is taking on a bigger role, with players stepping up both on and off the field. Confidence and experience are beginning to shape the team’s identity early on.

“My leadership skills have improved the most while being on the high school team. When I started as a freshman, I was insecure in my abilities and I didn’t want to get in the way of the upperclassmen who were more experienced,” senior Saydie Miller said. “The only way to get through this sport of failure is by having unwavering confidence. I lead my team using that confidence in myself and others. We lead by example and I know I am a role model to my team.”

That growth has translated into strong performances so far this season. Even with changes in the lineup, the team has continued to compete at a high level, leaning into its offensive strengths while adjusting defensively.

“Hitting really has been our strongest asset throughout the past couple years and it’s really encouraging to see it still is,” junior Tessa Mohr said. “Having lost most of our field defensively from last year, we’ve had to adapt. There are great things coming for us and I have no doubt we will perform as strong as we always have been.”

With final games approaching for many, the focus is not only on success, but on appreciating the experience and the people who have made it meaningful.

“Before the season ends, I want to enjoy and soak in the lasts. I love the coaches, the field, the community, and my teammates of course,” Miller said. “I want to have the most fun I can. I have been playing with some of the girls since we were little and I’m not ready to let that go.”
