Golf is a game of inches. The tiniest margin can be the difference between making par or a bogey, a win or a second place finish. In a game where every factor counts, having a steady mindset is essential. The Crimson Messenger talked to two experienced golfers on the NPHS Boys’ team, and they walked us through their mindset.

Seth Stephenson, a senior on the team, explained how he gets into “the zone”.

“I like to do pregame music, and then when I get to the course, I stretch out a lot. Then, I hit on the range. My pregame music is 80s rock, AC/DC, clean stuff like that,” Stephenson said. Once he’s in the match, he tries to focus on the shot he’s on, not the past.

“I just look at my next shot. I’m always thinking about the shot I’m hitting, and once I hit it, I’m on to the next. I don’t really say stuck on stuff like that,” Stephenson said.

Will Clark, a sophomore on the team, has experience with reframing his mindset.

“Last year, I expected to do really good, and I got off to a rough start…I had to practice a lot more than I expected,” said Clark. Now, he has a distinct way he resets during the match.

“I just try to remember I’m a good golfer and forget about it, try to move on,” said Clark.
