Freshmen have feelings too

Another school year has dawned on NPHS, and with that also comes a new class of freshmen. Unlike the previous years, the freshmen now must also adjust to not only a new building and teachers, but also to the new school rules imposed this year.

Many freshmen now have to learn to use lockers to store their belongings after the Indiana governor enforced the new rules before the beginning of the new school year. But, many students do not mind the new rules and are open to using the new lockers.

“They’re very easy to open, and I’ve been using them for a while now, so they’re not that hard to open,” freshman Reid Norris said.

“They are easy, as long as you remember your code,” said freshman Lucas Schroeder.

With the first few weeks of school finished, many freshmen already have a good first impression of what high school is so far.

“It’s pretty fun, I’ve been involved in football and that’s fun, all the teachers are pretty nice and (it’s) just overall a fun experience” said Norris

“The gyms are big, so that’s good,” said Schroeder.

The freshmen also have to deal with the experience of having to move to an entirely new building.

“(There are) Much longer hallways, bigger areas, more stairways,” said Schroeder.

“I mean, the only real difference is that there’s two floors, but other than that there’s no difference,” said Norris.

The crowded hallways this year are also a major difference that the freshmen must learn to adapt to this year.

“They basically make it hard for a freshman to make it to their locker because I still have to learn the school hallways,” said freshman Raelynn Willams.

But, the biggest change that the freshmen have already adapted to at the junior high is the new state-wide law banning students from having their phones during school.

“We’ve never been allowed cell phones in school so it’s normal, I know it will be harder for older people because they had phones and now they don’t, but not for me,” said Norris.

However, they all had ideas on how they could make the high school a bit better.

“Classes should be closer together. Sometimes I’m running a bit tight with the schedule trying to find my classes and stuff, and I’m still new and trying to find where everything is” said Norris.

But not everything they have experienced has been negative so far, they found things they enjoy here at the high school.

“Sports have been really great,” said Norris.

While Norris is more focused on enjoying sports, Williams was more focused on getting to know more people.

“There are kids in grades above freshmen you can be friends with,” said Willams.

Even though the school school year has just started and the new freshmen will surely face many trials and tribulations, hopefully the new freshmen class will experience a fantastic first year and a great start to NPHS school year.
