As the NPHS girls basketball team is nearing the end to its season, with a victory against Roncalli and against Eastern Hancock on Senior Night under their belt, the girls are confident as they go into the Sectional tournament.
“The biggest goal this year was to make it more fun and win a sectional championship. I think our goals have stayed the same and we’re doing what we can to make these goals reality in a couple weeks,” senior Gabbie Brown said.
The team has had a strong season with a record of 14-8. Senior Kenna Tweedy is also hopeful about the sectional tournament, in her last year she’s hoping for a win.
“We’re playing all the teams in our sectionals in season, so we should be able to at least learn how to play them better when it comes to the postseason,” Tweedy said.
As they progress into the postseason, areas of improvement are evident. Brown notices the ways that the team has grown in the last year.
“Anyone who has kept up with our team this season would be able to see the growth throughout the season. We have developed a lot more team chemistry and have figured out how to play with each other in an efficient manner. Our energy has been a huge improvement which leads to us playing better in general.” Brown said.
Even though Tweedy has not been able to play in recent games due to a health matter, her sportsmanship and team mentality remains consistent.
“I feel like we’re all playing together and doing really well. Obviously, there’s stuff that happens that we need to get better about, but I think it’s all around been pretty good.” Tweedy said.
Both of the seniors are reaching for the same thing: as mentioned previously, a sectional win. None of the senior class has claimed the title of sectional champions in the three years they have played. They are working hard to make this season their year.
“I think I could speak for the seniors with this but we would love to end this with a big sectional win, none of us have ever been a part of that while being on this team. I personally hope that we leave a lasting impression on our teammates so they carry our leadership and passion for the team.” Brown said.
“[I hope] Just that we end well as one: no bickering, no drama, and we can go out with a sectional championship.” Tweedy said.
